Professional Activities:
I have participated in the American Cancer Society at both the local and state level in Iowa since I moved to Waterloo in 1994. I am very active in cancer related activities in Waterloo. Currently I am the Chairperson of the Cancer Committee at Covenant Medical Center as well as being the Chairperson of the Radiation Safety Committee at Covenant since 1994. I am also a member of national radiation societies, such as the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology, American College of Radiology, and the American Radium Society.
Medical Interests:
I practice all aspects of general radiation oncology. However, I have a special interest in prostate cancer. I set up a new procedure called prostate brachytherapy in the Cedar Valley. In this procedure, radioactive seeds are permanently inserted into the prostate. Advantages of this procedure include possible lesser side effects and a one time treatment compared to another option involving 8 weeks of daily radiation. Both techniques, however, have differing advantages.
Personal Interests:
I enjoy computers, reading, gardening and traveling. In the past few years, I have been to England, Ireland, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Mexico, Canada, India, France, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
